Our History

Super Start® was founded in 1968 by John Smith, an automotive engineer who saw the need for better battery technology as cars became more sophisticated. Based in Michigan, the company started small, producing lead-acid batteries for the booming American auto market.

In the 1970s, as concerns grew over air pollution from leaded gasoline, Super Start® began researching alternative battery chemistries. This led to the development of valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries, which reduced hazardous emissions. When lead-acid technology improved in the 1980s, Super Start® was at the forefront, creating maintenance-free batteries that outperformed the competition.

By 1990, Super Start® had grown into one of the major battery suppliers for U.S. automakers. A state-of-the-art production facility opened in Ohio to meet growing demand. In the 2000s, Super Start® went global, forming partnerships and opening plants in Europe and Asia.
